An air force is an important part of any army – aircraft excellence provides cover and security for soldiers on the ground. More importantly, warplanes are essential for every country that wants to maintain its airspace sovereignty and secure its position as a leading military power in the world.

Currently, the fifth generation jet fighter is the most advanced fighter jet. Lockheed Martin, an American military aircraft manufacturer, defines fifth-generation fighters with these characteristics:

• Low-probability-of-intercept-radar, meaning it can avoid radar detection;
• High-performance airframe;
• Advanced avionics;

Many countries fly older, fourth-generation fighter jets that do not have fifth-generation features but are also very effective combat machines. These are cheaper and easier to produce than fifth-generation fighter jets and can sometimes be almost as good.

Fourth-generation fighter jets can be upgraded with some advanced features. better computers and avionics, and new powerful radar.

These fighters are called 4+ and 4 ++ generation fighter jets because they have the characteristics of the previous generation but the next generation.

#1- Sukhoi Su-57

The Sukhoi Su-57 is Russia’s first stealth aircraft. Its development was slowed down due to many problems and delays. By early 2022, only a handful of production examples existed. But they are far more advanced than previous prototypes, and Russia is about to upgrade the aircraft.

In the years to come, the Su-57 is ready to receive a new engine and various other upgrades, making the jet a huge improvement over the Su-27 concept. It’s a heavy fighter with outstanding low-speed maneuvers, as well as stealth features and the latest electronics and sensors.

#2- Lockheed Martin F-35 Lightning II

The F-35 Lightning II is controversial, with many critics citing its high cost and moderate flight performance. Although not as fast as the 4th generation jet aircraft, or the thrust-vector engine is not as maneuverable as the exhaust set, in other cases made for the F-35.

#3- Lockheed Martin F-22 Raptor

The US Air Force is the only user of the jet, as it was considered highly advanced to transfer to another country. However, the jet was regularly deployed abroad where it was used in multiple combat missions, proving its worth.

#4- Chengdu J-20

China’s own adoption of the 5th generation fighter jet, the J-20 Mighty Dragon, a heavy, powerful fighter jet designed to compete with the F-22 and Su-57. It may not be as maneuverable as its rivals without the thrust-vector engine exhaust, but the Chengdu J-20’s stealth design is still incredibly advanced.

Although the exact features of this aircraft have been categorized, it is well known that China continues to upgrade the jet. New variants have been developed, improved and a rather impressive number of new aircraft have been built.

#5- Shenyang FC-31

This light 5th generation fighter jet was designed a decade ago and has been in a state of disrepair ever since. However, recently the project has been dusted off, revived and upgraded. It will probably become China’s new carrier-carrying fighter jet and will even see some export sales.

Although little is known about its actual capabilities, recent photos show FC-31 with a redesigned engine housing, a new canopy and many other interesting upgrades.
